Above the Blue

Above the Blue began with a small gouache study from our first day in Sicily, looking out from a hilltop town toward the Mediterranean below.

After a month traveling through northern Europe in December, arriving in Sicily felt almost electric. There was sun, warmth, cactus-covered hillsides, and that incredible blue stretching out toward the horizon. When I returned to the image on a much larger scale, the colors became brighter and more exaggerated, especially the sea.

This painting developed slowly over time, with layers added, changed, and returned to again. I wanted it to hold onto that feeling of standing high above the water, completely awake to the color and beauty of where I was.
