The Studio

I’m fortunate to work in a large, light-filled studio. This space has always been central to my process. It’s where ideas begin to take shape and where I find my rhythm. The studio is a kind of sanctuary, a place to think, dream, and allow the work to unfold in its own time.

This space allows me to step away from the noise of daily life and take a deeper dive into my process. Here I feel the freedom to explore and keep things in motion. I often rotate between different works, themes, and sometimes materials as I move about the studio. Most often, though, I return to oil, drawn to the possibilities of mark-making and the interaction of color.

I love it most when the work becomes experimental and playful. That’s when I know I’m truly in the right place.

Bio

Liz Maxfield is a painter based on Vashon Island in the Pacific Northwest. Her work explores moments of presence through color, gesture, and observation. Her work ranges from expressive figure paintings to botanicals and travel-inspired scenes.

Working primarily in oil, Liz is drawn to the relationships between light, place, and form. Her paintings often begin with a moment of attention and unfold intuitively through color and movement.

Liz’s paintings are held in private collections and have been shown in galleries in Seattle and surrounding area, as well as in two international art fairs: Miami and Finland.

Painting Practice

In life and art, I find myself continually searching for balance. I think many of us are, in one way or another. In the midst of a vibrant and colorful life, I also seek peace and calm that can be expressed through color, abstraction, and the emotions that lie just beneath the surface.

This search for balance exists within each painting I create. The painting develops from this search. The colors also develop intuitively and I'm careful not to overthink them. I love the way they intersect, interact, and shape the emotional atmosphere of a work.

My hope is that the paintings carry this same sense of harmony to those who encounter them.

  • These abstract landscapes were created during a period when my studio time was brief and often interrupted by the rhythms of early motherhood. The horizon line became a kind of visual heartbeat—something steady I could return to as I moved in and out of the studio.

  • Workshops in My Studio

My studio is set up with two large tables that make it a comfortable and inspiring place to gather and create together. Most workshops are offered as private group experiences, booked by friends, families, or small groups who want to spend creative time together.

From time to time, I also host open workshops when my schedule allows.

Because my studio is uninsulated, workshops are typically held during the warmer months, spring and autumn are manageable with heaters.

If you’re interested in booking a workshop for your group or would like to be notified when I schedule an open session, please reach out. I’d love to create something meaningful and enjoyable for you.
